Arsene Wenger has suggested that Nani has been wasted by Manchester United after admitting his love for the Portuguese forward.
Nani is enjoying a fruitful season on loan to Sporting Lisbon but he was only allowed to leave Old Trafford temporarily after the Red Devils failed to find a buyer for him. On the back of the Arsenal manager’s latest comments, it is a surprise he did make an offer for the 28-year-old.
Whilst talking about Ricardo Quaresma, Wenger referred to Nani as a player he “loved” before suggesting his talent has been badly managed by his Premier League rivals. WASTED TALENT
He told beIN Sport: “Quaresma is a hugely talented player who we know well because he has been away from Portugal.
“He was with Barcelona and he is a player who can run with the ball, can give a final ball and he’s a typical Portuguese player.”
Asked if Quaresma could have been better, Wenger said: “Yes. Yes because he is a bit like another player I love very much, like Nani, you know.
“They are hugely talented players and maybe they have gone to clubs where there were not rated because there were some other top star players who took over.
“It is one thing to be a great player but when you arrive into another big club, there is always somebody else who wants to be the best and sometimes you have to live a little bit in the shadow of these players.”
MASSIVE POTENTIAL
When Nani arrived at Old Trafford, he was seen as a potential successor to Cristiano Ronaldo. Sir Alex Ferguson paid a reported £17 million to bring him from Sporting Lisbon, but he has failed to live up to the lofty expectations.
When David Moyes awarded him a five-year deal worth £100,000-a-week, it was seen as a tremendous show of faith towards the forward. However, it is now thought the deal was only secured to make sure Manchester United could get a decent transfer fee.
COULD HE SIGN FOR ARSENAL?
A move to Arsenal may seem on the cards after Wenger’s comments, but the Frenchman currently enjoys an embarrassment of riches in the wide forward positions. Alexis Sanchez, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Theo Walcott currently occupy those roles with Serge Gnabry closing in on a return from injury.
Joel Campbell and Lukas Podolski are both out on loan, but the former is likely to return and fight for a first team place. Don’t expect to see Nani at the Emirates.
